A/N: Sorry for the crap factor and any typos. I wrote this in five minutes and my head is spinning insanely cos of my contacts.

It was like they were twins, like she grew as an extended entity from his rib or limb. She branched off to become a new body, a new life, but somehow still remained a part of him.

When Katara was born, he was a sullen, little boy (refused milk and comfort) and declared that it was the worst day of his life. That it was just his dumb luck to receive a baby sister (instead of the brother). Sokka was furious. Sokka was hell-bent on making her life miserable (because she made his so).

And then, she looked up—little ball of downy brown fuzz sprouting from her head, blue eyes open like the lapis sea—and smiled at him playfully. She learned to be coy literally at zero-years-old.

In the winter, their mother fed them hand-brewed stewed prunes laced with hot, courage-rising brandy their father would ferment in the fugacious summer days.

Sokka would sit by her, next to the fire, always making sure she was wrapped and cozy (as can be) and never wanting anything. He told her stories, of his day and of the other boys: fishing on the endless ocean with towering white supernatural sculptures of ice soaring out of the waters, and how that wasn’t even the most magical part.

And he would always finish each story-time session with a promise that he would take her there on their own private adventure just when she will be just-a-bit-older, someday.

(Someday never came, only the invaders did.)
