…at the place where endings begin…

The parents were out for the night, as were the other children (a birthday party, movies with friends, and a momentarily declared fanciful shopping trip). And they were left with two boxes full of trivial childhood memorabilia and a thousand words unsaid between them. The simple mandate being: clean up, pack away.

Casey sighed nostalgically, tossing in a stuffed animal some ex-boyfriend once gave her (what Truman didn’t know, didn’t hurt). Derek scoffed, thinking she was so childish, because these affected and insipid gestures meant nothing—

Now that they were leaving for university. And what remained (apart from the bickering and constant tantrums) was an aching that would not subside.

And so, he tried for an insult or two.

“Stop it, Derek. Can’t we have one night being civilized with each other?”

He grinned, thinking maybe he’s pushed her over the edge at last. “Only if you quit shoveling this crap down my throat. You call it music?”

“It’s Eric Clapton. He’s very talented, much more so than you’ll ever hope to be.”

“Right, right. And I’m betting that this song is called ‘Sappy Girl Meets Mama’s Boy’?” his grin widened, ear-to-ear, teasing escalated.

“Ha-ha, that’s so funny, so witty. But what was I thinking? Someone like you would never understand class and sophistication in music. I hope you never speak to me in public at Queen’s.”

“You wish, like I would ever acknowledge you in front of other normal people. And just so you know, I do understand class and sophistication. I’m a fantastic dancer.”

Casey closed the gap separating them, long strides, full of aplomb and a glaring challenge. She smiled, dimples appearing, lovely and clever (eyes glistening, mind flashing, gears rotating) and—

(she had him trapped)

Derek stepped back, automatically putting on a front, a defense. Her perfume was strong, engulfing, his head was spinning, and soon, he was tripping over air. Really, there was no need for this.

“If you’re such a great dancer, then why don’t you show me? As one dancer to another.”

A professional contest.

He laughed, half-shrugged (secretly glad), and extended a hand very gentlemanly. She took it with grace (Derek partially expected her to decline) and twirled towards him.

Show off.

But Casey was a natural, and he couldn’t help but be a little mesmerized, if only for a second or—

She hit the replay button, tune rising, resounding beyond the hollowed hallways of their humble suburban home. Carefully, she sidestepped around him him, feet barely touching the ground—gliding—and placed his hand daintily on her waist. Now that was unexpected.

—hands clasped, they moved in synchrony—

“Ouch, De-rek! Stop stepping on my feet.”

Derek looked down, saw the open-toed sandals and gave her a quizzical look. She ignored, no response, cast it off as a mere annoyance.

He held her, almost afraid that if he stopped (the music fades) she will disappear, and that this would have all been a dream—or nightmare. Casey leaned in close, placed her head against his shoulder, and tiptoed on her ballerina-trained feet. To meet him, to nearly—barely (if she had dared)—kiss him.

She stopped and sighed.

So, he bent forward, kissing her dot on the lips. Sealed it with another characteristic smirk, infinitely cocky, forever assured, and innately Derek.

Casey smiled and gave him an embarrassed peck.

And they lulled to a halt as the rumble of the garage door opening fragmented the spell into minuscule shards, which drifted miles apart.

And in that moment, they pulled apart, both retreating into familiar waters.

(But for a short while—a singular, brief, transient time—it had been enough.)
