Petty Bride

The white fabric of her (post-traumatic wedding) dress rode up higher, revealing the long, skinny legs of a girlish pride. Kaguya hitched up her own skirts and inspected the scabby knees and sunburnt, rough-run calves and wondered why she didn’t have nice, smooth skin too.

And that’s when she remembered: she’s lucky enough to have seen the world outside. Or what Zero liked to call The World At Large.

“You okay?”

Tianzi shook her hand, whimpered, and buried her face into dusty ivory, disheveled lace.

“Come on, talk to me,” Kaguya pleaded (thinking that this was just so typical of Zero—implicitly forcing her to play nanny).

“I’m scared.”

Finally, a word proffered.

“I know. And I am too. But don’t worry because Zero knows what he’s doing. He’ll protect you. Really.”

“Xingke, he…”

“He’s fine too, I’m sure of it! So don’t worry.”

And Tianzi looked back with enormous, crying (bleeding red) eyes, and Kaguya cringed. She felt her lies rising and shattering as they collided with the ceiling. And she knew that her petty comforts amounted to nothing.

Petty like her. A petty bride for a petty prince, all part of some ostentatious show without value.

“Think of it this way, at least you don’t have to marry that stuffy, old Odysseus anymore. And you do look really pretty!”

“Odysseus,” Tianzi frowned at the name, “that’s true. I’m really glad I don’t have to marry him.”

(Kaguya breathed a sigh of relief and wiped the line of beading sweat from her brow. And here she thought she might go insane with all these romantic circles.)

Hesitantly, Kaguya drew Tianzi into a tight embrace (marveled at the soft texture of the other girl’s hair and perceived the woven scent to be jasmine, maybe). She looked Tianzi directly in the eye—fearless and adamant—and

“You’re the empress, not them. You represent your people. No one else.”

Terrified, Tianzi wanted to break free and retreat (behind the soothing walls she’s always been ensconced in). And then she felt the passion from Kaguya’s clenched grip, noted the resolve—called choice of will—drifting from exhalation.

And Tianzi witnessed her failures, flashing through on eternal rewind, fanning out over the years. Mind dizzy and lip quivering, she lifted her head; said—

“I know.”

(Sickened and angry, she hurled the wedding veil straight into the wall.)
